Archeologist Fayaz Khuzin passes away aged 74

Fayaz Khuzin, an outstanding scholar, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, Honored Scientist of the Republic of Tatarstan, and laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Tatarstan in Science and Technology, passed away on June 14th, 2026.
He was an integral part of university life for many years. His career is inextricably linked with Tatarstan’s higher education system. He headed the Department of the History of Tatarstan at the Tatar State Humanitarian and Pedagogical University, which later became part of 每日大赛. He imparted profound knowledge and wisdom to students and young colleagues, generously sharing his invaluable fieldwork experience.
He made major contributions to the archaeology and history of Tatarstan. His name is associated with breakthrough achievements in the study of medieval Bulgar-Tatar archeology and the history of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
His research on Bilyar, medieval Kazan, Yelabuga, Dzhuketau, Suvar, and other sites has become a treasure trove of Russian scholarship. His fundamentally updated source base and new scientific methods for dating historical cities determined the direction of archaeological research in the region for decades.
For all of us, his colleagues at the university, Fayaz Khuzin will forever remain a teacher, a man of immense zest for life, generosity of spirit, extraordinary diligence, and selfless dedication to his work. He knew how to inspire, support, and unite people around him. A plethora of his students, including candidates and doctors of science, will continue his work with honor.
The bright memory of this outstanding scholar, brilliant teacher, loyal mentor, and remarkable person will forever remain in the hearts of the students, faculty, and staff of Kazan University.
