KFU set to receive 830 million rubles in continuation of Priority 2030 project
KFU was able to reposition its research projects in a more practice-oriented manner to obtain products and technologies which are in demand in Russia. In this, the University is accompanied by its strategic partner, Gazprombank. The bank group aims to strengthen the investment potential of universities through partnerships.
Our University has concentrated its efforts on three strategic priorities – non-traditional hydrocarbons, biomedicine and pharmaceutics, and small tonnage chemistry.
In the second project, synthetic biology and genetic engineering is used to create cell therapy and regenerative medications.
Rector Lenar Safin said in his report to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, “We have established a biomedical cluster with education, research, and clinical practice. The outer framework of the cluster includes production sites at Izvarino Pharma, 46 student startups, and the RNA Technology Consortium. The cluster aims to alleviate staff shortage, and the University Clinic plans to provide biotechnological medications to patients.”
So far, 12 prototypes of gene and cell preparations have been prepared, and 2 have entered preclinical trials. Three more are scheduled for preclinical trials in 2026-2027. Finally, 2028 is set as the goal for obtaining permits for clinical trials.
Apart from medicine, this strategic project also creates technology for agriculture and industry.
As for enhanced oil recovery and non-traditional hydrocarbons, the Rector noted, “Our portfolio is focused on addressing the objectives of this industry and import substitution. We create technology for prospecting and development of old depoists, recovery optimization, refining, and integrate digital tools like machine learning, digital twins, and intelligent recovery management. Our project is on a sustainable growth path with R&D increase at 20% a year.”
In chemistry, the University has opened a center for the development, pilot testing and scaling of technology with industry leaders, including Sibur.
Priority 2030 funding supports 106 universities with 26.8 billion rubles in 2026.
