Former Kazan University rector Yury Konoplyov passes away aged 83

The sad notification came on 5 May.

Yury Konoplyov (6 December 1939 – 5 May 2023) was a mathematician and mechanician, Distinguished Worker of Science of Russia and Tatarstan, winner of the Prize of the Ministry of Higher and Specialized Education of the Soviet Union, member of the Russian Committee on the Theory of Machines and Mechanisms, and full member of the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences. He served as rector from 1990 till 2001.

Konoplyov’s parents both worked in the aviation industry. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in Kazan University and received a diploma in mechanics in 1962. He presented his PhD thesis in 1969 and DSc thesis in 1982. Since 1988, he worked as Chair of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and head of the dissertation board on mechanics of deformed solids and mechanics of liquid, gas and plasma. He served as vice-rector for international cooperation in 1986-1990 and as rector in 1990-2001.

His research mostly dealt with deformable solids. Konoplyov obtained results in non-linear strain condition of deformable solid bodies and structures, static and dynamic stability, oscillations of shells, plates and rod systems. The scholar authored over 180 papers and books.

Yury Konoplyov’s colleagues and students always mention his diligence, helpfulness, and incredible work ethic. He worked as rector during the most challenging years of post-Soviet reforms and did his best to preserve and maintain the University’s potential.

The University team expresses deepest condolences to Konoplyov’s loved ones and friends. He will always be a presence in our memory.
